On January 4, 2012, five area schools met at the Friend Public Schools to have their instructional staff improve their “teacher skills”. Schools who attended the all-day training were Friend Public Schools, Dorchester Public Schools, Exeter-Milligan Public Schools, Shickley Public Schools, and McCool Junction Public Schools. These five schools are collectively called the “Blue River Cohort” and have coordinated in-service days to allow their teachers to network ideas and strategies, and to also learn new things from the experts of the ESU 6 Staff Development team. This is the second successful year that the Blue River Cohort has met. The schools get together twice a year for these valuable trainings. The teachers of the Friend district hosted over 300 educators in the building.
The ESU 6 staff developers were the trainers-of-teachers for four different concurrent sessions during the full day of activities. The staff developers included: Toby Boss, Lynne Herr, April Kelley, Lenny VerMaas, Jen Madison, Nancy Meyer, Mitzi Hoback, and Suzanne Whisler. The hour-long sessions focused on strategies that would engage students in the classrooms and would also provide learning-feedback to their teachers. The title of sessions included; Marzano Research Lab Academy Action Research work session(s), iPad Basics, Elementary Academic Games, Using Videos in the Classroom, NeSA-W Update, Interacting with New Content-Questioning, Introduction to Google Docs, How to use your iPad2 Effectively, Engagement Strategies for Vocabulary Acquisition II, Summarizing and Note Taking Strategies, Engaging Students in Content with Web 2.0 Tools, Google Forms, iPod/iPad Application Swap, Learning with the Brain in Mind for Student Engagement II, Video Rounds I, Cooperative Learning Strategies, and Writing Tasks for Thinking and Learning.
The Friend teachers extended their hospitality to their neighbors by providing an awesome “snack center” during break times. The Friend staff appreciates all the hard work, dedication, and expertise given by the ESU 6 staff developers. A school is as good as the teachers in it; and the staff recognizes the need to be a lifelong learner and giver.
